Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda is a Calcutta based businessman who is the Chairman of the 2,000 crore turnover Sarda Group and is better known in the jute industry for reviving as many as 9 sick and ailing jute mills in and around Calcutta.The Sardas control about 22 percent of the Rs 3,500 crore jute market. With a workforce of over 50,000 in West Bengal, the Sarda Group is one of West Bengals' largest employers. The Group, which currently has under its ambit eight jute mills which together produce 500 tonnes of jute products daily, has set up a jute mill in Alwar, Rajasthan, at an estimated investment of Rs 100 crore. According to Mr Ghanashyam Sarda, the jute industry was faced with a shortage of skilled manpower. Even so, the 100-year-old industry had not yet been able to set up a proper training centre that could impart education and technical skills to people seeking employment in the jute industry. Hence,Sarda Group has firmed up plans to set up a training centre for unskilled workers in the jute industry.From advanced training in jute production and shop floor processes and applications, workers would be trained to improve their employability in the jute industry. To begin with, 100 people would be trained for a period of six months. Over the coming years, around 1,000 would be engaged in the training process. During the training period, trainees would be paid a stipend of Rs 30 per day and also be provided with one meal. According to Mr Sarda, if the experiment proved successful, the group would set up more such training centres in other parts of the State. His Momentous Sarda group acquires 4% stake in GIC Housing Sarda group of Calcutta, has acquired a 4% stake in GIC Housing calling it a long term investment. The investor friendly approach of the new West Bengal government led by Buddhadev Bhattacharya has been acting as a stimulant to the companies willing to set up shops and development centres in Bengal. His talk focussed on the importance of developing good survival instinct for the budding entrepreneurs and managers. Mr. Sarda stressed on the fact that one should not get disheartened and stop trying after a few failures and gave the example of Abraham Lincoln and Henry Ford who got highly successful later in life, despite several initial setbacks.
